Should there be an official Twitter hashtag for our industry?

We all know that the Twitter hashtags for Affiliate Summit East and West are #asw11 / #ase11 for this year, but should we have an official hashtag for the affiliate marketing industry as a whole?

I've seen so many different variations of what people think it should be, but have never seen a discussion topic about it.

Let's hear your thoughts!

Hi Dan -

Have you seen this in other industries? I track a bunch of related keywords in Twitter now, so a hashtag on all affiliate marketing would be redundant to me.

I guess to encompass everything I use #affiliatemarketing but Shawn is right it could be pretty redundant.

Something with the logical words like #affiliatemarketing takes up so many characters, too.

How about #affmkt - We all have picked up the hashtag for ASE and W?

Hashtag catch on when users have a reason to use them... rarely because someone said to.

Twitter started without HashTags.. but a few people at an even agreed to use them, and it caught on.

Events are natural for this. Long term is not. But the best rule to follow for all things Twitter is NO RULES

Go ahead an suggest one. If it catches on, great, if not, no harm done.

I've done a few that caught one.. including a top trending topic with 125,000 tweets that started out as a whim one day. The reason they are successful is that they are based in a meme that is very easy to share. Short is very important.

I used #tcr for about a year with it hitting the trending topics several times during my radio show (TwitCastRadio was the old name of the show). All along, other were using the tag for TheColbertReport but we overwhelmed them during our show. Needless to say, as Twitter grew Colbert's fame overtook me :)

So my two cents here would be to try for #aff or even #af. You can do a Twitter search to see if someone else is using them.

Then let's hold a TweetChat and see if it catches on

You guys are right about having a shorter tag in this case I see a lot of people use the term aff so #aff is a pretty good hashtag.

Great insight! I've mostly seen #affiliates or #affiliatemarketing, but the latter definitely eats up a lot of Twit space lol

#aff is nice, short, and catchy - we could have a winner! :)

I think it might be good if everyone used it and it was short...but if no one knew about it, it would be pointless..right??

Every #hashtag starts with one person using it.

So not starting because it might not catch on is a sure way to insure it doesn't

Personally, I don't care if there is a tag. I'd support anyone who wants to popularize #aff, but there is no loss if it doesn't catch on

Apparently #aff means something in another language bc it's being tweeted about frequently. Check it out: http://search.twitte...page=1&q=%23aff

I've been using #affiliate for awhile on relevant posts.

I did some digging and the #aff hashtag is either a mild invective or a curse word in Portuguese, depending on where you look. I think we should skip that one. :)

Well at least we all learned how to swear in Portugese by accident!

I feel like #affiliate might be a tad bit too long? What do we think about #affiliate vs #affmkt?
